Speaking of the Lyrical and the Soul
We will forever remember that morning in the Isle of Skye; an especially happy morning when we left Ross with Mum having her coffee treat, while Maggi and I went off to find the perfect present for 'Skye baby' newborn Romi. We slipped into a gorgeous local shop with old-fashioned bay windows and packed with interesting things. Yet more interesting to us than any thing on shelf or rack were the voices of the two senior men whose shop it was.
We had to figure they were brothers, and that they had been running the shop together since the beginning of time. But it was the cadence of their tongue that sent us away-with-the-faeries; melodic and lyrical, these two spoke in the soft sing-song voice of the Isles; human voice lilting beyond what we are immersed in from extended exposure to urban industrial milieus. We two were transfixed, almost breathless at the beauty of the sound. We left the shop when we felt we could not pretend to be 'just looking' any longer, but still compelled to go back in to hear them again..We wanted to stay and stay.
